The 4DTV 3-in-1 remote control operate your satellite receiver, VCR and TV by following the simple programming instructions presented here. In addition, your remote control is both UHF and IR ready, so that you may use it from virtually any location within your home. Remote Control Range Typical UHF range is 35 to 120 feet. The specific UHF range of the remote control in your system is affected by many factors. Wall and house construction materials, IRD location and other components co-located with the receiver can all affect the performance of the UHF transmission range. If the range in your installation is inadequate you can improve the performance of UHF range in several ways: Move the "whip" antenna away from the components by adding a short length of properly terminated 75-ohm coaxial cable. Small changes in the positioning of the antenna can make large changes in performance. Add a 10dB UHF-RF amplifier between the "whip" antenna and the input to the IRD. These small amplifiers are available at most electronics parts suppliers such as Radio Shack. This type of amplifier will boost the signal coming into the receiver and can help to extend the UHF range of the remote control. Use existing antenna or cable wiring in your house to relocate the supplied "whip" antenna or a small set of ‘rabbit ears’ to a more central location in your home. Combining this with the RF amplifier described above will provide you with maximum range. Using Your Remote The 4DTV remote control is set at the factory to control all of the 4DTV receiver functions, but in order to use it to operate your TV and VCR as well, you will need to "program" it for the brand of TV and VCR you own. The 4DTV remote control has three main modes of operation: 4DTV mode, TV mode and VCR mode. This means that when you press the 4DTV, TV or VCR keys on the remote control, you enable it to control each of these devices, one at a time. Naturally, some of the remote control keys have more than one function, depending upon which mode you are using at the time. Keep this in mind as you read the descriptions for each remote control key. Also, keep in mind that some 4DTV functions are available only within 4DTV mode. Among these special functions are access to the 4DTV menus through the OPTIONS key, use of the Interactive Program Guide (IPG) through the GUIDE key, and the ability to select a satellite by using the SAT key. In addition, you can assume that if you see a key on the 4DTV remote that you have never seen on a TV or VCR remote control, it is only useful for 4DTV functions and can only operate when the remote is in the 4DTV mode. Programming the Volume Function One of the newest features added to the 4DTV IRD is the ability for the remote control to operate the source volume of the receiver via UHF and Infrared (IR). If your TV does not have remote control of volume, or if you would like to be able to control the volume of the receiver from other locations in your home, for whole house audio applications for instance, you can "program" that function into the remote control. The 3-in-1 remote is programmed at the factory to control the volume of your TV. To reprogram the remote control to operate the source volume of the IRD press and hold the 4DTV button at the top of the remote until the LED light begins to flash. The key in 1-0-0. You will see the light stop flashing. The volume function of the remote control will now bring up a volume "bar" on the on-screen display of the receiver and allow you to control volume via UHF and IR. Multiple 4DTV UHF Frequencies If you have more than one 4DTV receiver you may want to prevent the remote controls from affecting the other receivers. This may also be important if your neighbor has a 4DTV. To prevent this kind of interference you must "pair" each remote control with one receiver. In order to do this you will have to assign a new "address" to each pair of remote controls and receivers so that each pair functions independently of the others. To assign a unique "address" to a pair of remote controls and receivers: Press the POWER key on the receivers front panel to turn it on.  Press the UP key and the DOWN key on the front of the receiver at the same time. The receiver will display two figures: first an "A," then a second number from 0 to 3. All together, it looks like this: "A 0." The second figure is also known as the "address" to which we referred earlier. Press the UP or DOWN keys on the receiver’s Front Panel to change the address to 0, 1, 2, or 3. Press the ENTER key on the front panel to memorize the change. Failure to do this will cause the receiver to reset to the factory mode of "A 0" the next time the power is cycled. Press the POWER key to exit this mode On the remote control that you plan to use with the receiver, press and hold down the 4DTV key for about three seconds until the LED flashes. On the remote control, enter the numbers "00" and the third number (the address) that you already have entered on the Front Panel of the receiver (either 1, 2, or 3). If the remote control accepts the new address, the LED will flash rapidly several times. The four possible address combinations are "000," "001," 002’" and "003." If you are using the volume function to control the source volume of the 4DTV receiver the codes should begin with the number "1." The four possible codes for source volume control are "100," "101," 102," and "103." Programming the Remote Control for Your TV or VCR Turn on your TV or VCR Use the table provided below to find the brand of your TV or VCR After the manufacturer’s brand name is a three digit code number (or several three digit code numbers). Press and hold the TV or VCR key on the 4DTV remote control for at least three seconds – until the LED on your remote flashes. When the LED flashes, key in the first of the three digit codes (listed in the table) for your TV or VCR brand using the number keys on the remote control. Make sure to do this accurately and without a long delay. If the remote control "accepts" the brand code, you will see several flashes on the LED. If it does not flash, repeat steps 4 and 5. After the remote control accepts the code, press the POWER key on the remote control to make sure the remote control is able to turn you TV or VCR off. This means it is functioning properly. If your TV or VCR does not respond to the remote control, even though it has "accepted" the manufacturer’s code, repeat steps 4, 5, and 6 using the second three-digit code from the table. If this does not work try the third code, etc., until the remote control accepts the code and your TV or VCR responds to the remote control. Make a note of the correct code for your TV and VCR and store it in a safe and convenient place. You may need it for future reference. If the batteries on the remote control die or you remove them you will need to reprogram the remote with these codes. Turn on the TV or VCR – depending upon whether you wish to program the 4DTV remote control for your TV or VCR. Press the TV key (or VCR key) for at least three seconds – until the LED blinks. Press the same key (TV or VCR) again, but don’t hold it. The LED will now remain on without blinking. This means that the remote control is now able to search for a code that works with your TV or VCR. The following steps explain how to "scan" through the TV (or VCR) codes stored in your remote control by using the UP & DOWN keys. (The LED will not be lit while the UP & DOWN keys are depressed.) While pointing the remote control at your TV (or VCR), press the UP key to scan upward to the next code. If the transmitted code is the correct on, your TV (or VCR) will turn off, responding as if its POWER key were pressed. If your TV (or VCR) does not respond, depress the UP key to try the next code. When your TV (or VCR) turns on or off as a result of the transmitted code, you will know that you have found the correct code. When you have found the correct code (power to your TV or VCR is toggled on or off), press the TV (or VCR) key. This will store the manufacturer’s code.
